Blog | Automated Inbound Receiving: From Loose Loads to Pallets

Unloading loose loads is the most laborious task in modern warehousing. While there are emerging automated solutions for unloading boxes from the container, the missing piece lies in accurately sorting and palletizing those boxes. XYZ Robotics provides a completely automated solution to streamline this entire workflow.

From Loose Cartons to Organized Pallets

The solution comprises a RockyOne robot, a RockyOne SE robot, a five-sided barcode scanner, and a sorting conveyor line. Carton boxes unloaded by RockyOne are sequentially placed onto a conveyor and pass through a five-sided scanning system that identifies the SKU ID and the batch number. The cross-belt sorter module further sorts the boxes before they are finally palletized by RockyOne SE with reorientation capability.

Ensuring Flexibility and Ease of Use

Rocky robots are built to handle the messy reality of logistics. The RockyOne vision system identifies the size, position, and orientation of boxes even when they are stacked irregularly. To boost productivity, the robot can pick multiple boxes at once—both horizontally and vertically—and release them one by one to ensure the scanner gets a clear read.

The system also automatically generates pallet patterns optimized for maximum loading density while ensuring stability. The user can also manually designate specific pallet patterns through an intuitive HMI tablet.

If a box’s incoming orientation doesn’t match the plan—or if barcodes must face a specific direction—both RockyOne and RockyOne SE can rotate the item mid-air to ensure perfect placement.

Global Success Stories

This solution is already delivering results for customers worldwide. In Krefeld, Germany, a DIY home improvement market leader uses the system to handle diverse items weighing up to 29 kg (64 lbs). In Los Angeles, U.S., the 3PL provider UNIS processes thousands of different SKUs of home appliances. This setup achieves a throughput of 400 to 700 cases per hour and can empty a 40-foot high-cube container in just two hours. By ensuring product faces are correctly aligned, RockyOne SE makes these goods immediately ready for retail display.

The Future of Inbound Logistics

XYZ Robotics is constantly evolving. The team is currently upgrading the system to handle unknown incoming items and even more complex loading scenarios. The goal is simple: to make warehouses safer, more predictable, and more ergonomic. By removing the heavy lifting, XYZ Robotics helps global partners improve operational efficiency and worker satisfaction.
